In order of importance. A fan and a mat will improve your sessions more than an expensive trainer upgrade.

1. A powerful fan

Indoors there's no airflow, so your core temperature climbs fast and power drops. Point one strong fan at your face and chest; add a second from the side for hard sessions.

2. Trainer mat

Protects the floor from sweat, stops the trainer creeping and cuts vibration noise, which matters in flats. Look for at least 6mm thick and 180cm long.

3. Sweat guard and towels

Sweat corrodes headsets, bolts and frames. A sweat net between your bars and saddle catches most of it.

4. Laptop, tablet or TV setup

You'll stare at the screen for hours, so put it at eye level and within reach. A standing desk on wheels doubles as a work desk.

5. Heart rate monitor

Essential for training zones and for smart fans that follow your heart rate. Chest straps are more accurate than wrist sensors.

6. Front wheel riser block

Levels your bike on the trainer and stops the front wheel rolling. Cheap and easy to forget.

7. Cadence sensor

Some trainers don't measure cadence. A small sensor on the crank fixes that.
